Book Unboxing and Preview of ‘Sayyid Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi: Life and Works’ by Abdul Kadar Choughley.

As salaamu alai kumm wa rahmatullahi wa barakath,

2013-07-19 12.47.45One of life’s little pleasures is reading a good old book or better still a hardcover on a rainy wintry evening…the smell of its ink is a big part of that experience, which is why I feel eBooks will never be able to match that feel, let alone replacing the actual book.

eBook’s, my dear readers, are but a compromise.

And if the book happens to be on one of the greatest Islamic personalities of the last century, the joy only multiplies.

This morning I experienced the above when by the grace of Allah subhanahu wa ta’ala, I finally laid my hands on a biographical on Hazrath Shaikh Maulana Sayyid Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi (may Allah have mercy on him) – by far one of the greatest scholars of the Muslim ummah of the past century from India.

The book is titled ‘Sayyid Abul Hasan Ali Nadwi: Life and Works’ by Abdul Kadar Choughley, all this while I thought the only biography on the great Shaikh was written by Shaikh Akram Nadwi (damath baraka tuhum) but I was wrong. This book precedes the one written by Shaikh Akram Nadwi.

UPDATE: This book was published in December 2011 while Shaikh Akram Nadwi’s book was released in March 2013.

The book is of a very good print quality, which is a pleasant surprise considering that Indian publishers hardly give importance to print quality and hence this is a welcome change.

The following is a description of the book given by the publisher:

The volume presents a comprehensive study of the life and works of Sayyid Abul Hasan ‘Ali Nadwi (1913-1999). Sayyid Abul Hasan ‘Ali Nadwi is seen as an important scholar in the modern Islamic resurgence who has made significant contributions to contemporary Islamic thought. He was one of the few Indian ‘ulama to have taken seriously the dynamic role of Islam in a multi-religious society.

The book discusses the early life, family and education of the scholar and his major writings that are concerned with the themes of the primacy of the Qur’an and the sunnah as harbingers of world civilisation, ishlah (reform) and tajdid (revival) as anchors of Islamic resurgence, the methodological approach of da’wah, Islam and the West, and Islamic order in an Indian setting.

With quotations and references from published translations of his Urdu and Arabic works including his autobiography, it details the importance of his coherent approach to the diversity of issues in the twentieth century and the importance of his autobiography Karwan in this context.

It deals with his participative role in the Indian mainstream activities, examining the social and spiritual crises facing Muslims. With an overview of contemporary Islamic movements, it takes up his relationship with and contribution to the Tabligh Jama’ at, a global movement founded by Mawlana Ilyas noted for its reformist trends. The book will undoubtedly be of interest to scholars and students of Islamic studies.
